We are currently recruiting for a PRODUCT ENGINEERING SPECIALIST to join our Hamilton, Ontario facility.

The perfect candidate for this exciting opportunity would have experience planning, cost estimating, and developing, implementing and maintaining engineering requirements for new and modified products.

Primary Responsibilities will include:

As a Product Engineering Specialist, you will be responsible for planning, cost estimating, implementing and maintaining Engineering requirements for new and modified products.

Duties:
  • Develop and modify Bill of Materials (Product Structure)
  • Respond to RFQ’s by determining product costs (i.e. labour and materials)
  • Complete Engineering Change Requests (ECR’s)
  • Determine material requirements for new products or source and recommend alternative materials for existing products
  • Create and issue rudimentary work instructions and packaging specifications to Production
  • Maintain Engineering documentation and records (i.e. Customer and Company product specifications, drawing master file, product and quality test and process plans, specification revisions issued internally and externally)
  • Develop 2D and/or 3D drawings using Solidworks for new products and modify or make improvements to existing drawings on repeat orders
  • Ensure drawings meet internal engineering format standards (unless otherwise agreed to with Customer)
  • Ensure drawings are accurate, detailed and meet manufacturing capabilities and internal engineering format standards
  • Ensure drawings are properly filed and maintained within the vault for revision level and approvals
  • Provide backup support for major programs, including the printing and organization of drawings and kit assemblies (FFL)
  • Manage, coordinate and communicate sample build requirements and timelines to First Articles/Pattern Maker and Production, as required
  • Brainstorm potential solutions and concept and publish design briefs and DFMEAs on major projects
  • Develop, communicate and maintain First Article drawings, BOM (including parts, material, quantities & labour) and parts lists, critical dimensions and inspection points
  • Coordinate First Articles, samples, and prototypes, as required, including minuted design review meetings
  • Ensure documented engineering records are maintained
  • Investigate approved testing labs and assist in creating inspection and test plan
  • Assist in tooling design
  • Provide internal technical support to the shop floor by assisting Production with the interpretation of customer or FELLFAB® drawings and specifications
  • Provide external technical support through customer visits and status/review meetings with the Sales team
  • Work closely with Quality Dept for testing and certification requirements to meet AS9100 Quality System Standard
  • Work closely with Purchasing to source new or substitute materials
  • Participate in Contract Bid and Contract Award meetings
  • Ensure samples are clearly identified (e.g. Engineer/person responsible, reason for sample being in area, etc.)
  • Recommend and initiate continuous improvement initiatives into engineering (i.e. waste and cost reduction)
  • Create manual and electronic patterns and markers using Investronica or Optitex, ensuring pattern designs are created for manufacturability and repeatability
  • Calculate pattern dimensions, determine pattern orientations, (nesting), add appropriate notches and drill holes and make adjustments as required
  • Provide backup support to the Cutting Room Supervisor in the area of marker development

 

Requirements:

Minimum Educational and Skills Requirements:

  • Mechanical, Industrial, Manufacturing or Textile Technologist diploma or degree
  • Minimum 3 years of recent hands-on Solidworks experience

Other Knowledge/Skills/Experience/Abilities Required:

  • Creating 2D/3D engineering drawings, BOM’s, setting up part numbering product structures
  • Costing estimating (material’s & labour) for quotations and BOM creation
  • Previous hands-on experience with patterning, markers, and computerized cutting
  • Ability to work on multiple projects, within various market segments and with competing deadlines
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to demonstrate accuracy in calculations and engineering documentation
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to communicate with all levels of employees, as well as customers
  • LEAN manufacturing experience with a proven track record of implementing continuous improvement initiatives
  • Competent computer skills including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Creating product specifications, work instructions and inspection and test plans
