As one of the first shelters of its kind in Ontario, Gillian’s Place brings over 40 years of experience and expertise in gender-based violence service in Niagara. Since 1977, we have grown from an eight-bed volunteer-run emergency shelter to a multi-site provider of free and confidential services that support women, children, genderqueer, Two-Spirit, trans, and non-binary individuals escaping the cycle of violence and abuse. Today, these services include a 34-bed emergency shelter, second-stage housing, a 24/7 phone or text crisis support line, safety planning, expert counselling, child and youth programs, legal advice and support, education and violence prevention programs, and a transitional housing and support program.
Hours of Work: Sun & Mon: 10 am to 5:30 pm, Tues to Thurs: 12 pm to 7:30 pm
Must be available to flex schedule as required

Position and Department Overview
Reporting directly to the Director of Client Services & Facility Operations, the Cleaning Support worker’s primary function is to keep the shelter clean, storage areas organized, and provide overall support to the daily functions of the shelter. As with all employees of Gillian’s Place, they has a strong understanding of gendered violence and a commitment to providing superior service to our clients.
• Keeping shelter clean; disinfecting/thorough cleaning of common areas and offices
• Ensuring that shelter residents are completing their daily cooperative tasks (i.e. cleaning their bathrooms, maintaining a clean unit)
• General maintenance and repairs (including painting, drywall repair, minor plumbing, etc.)
• Cleaning and minor repairs of our off-site second-stage units
• Laundry
• Organizing and putting away donations and shelter supplies
• Maintaining inventory of department supplies
• Accompanying vendors in the shelter
• Reporting repairs required or maintenance concerns to supervisor
• Provide overall support to the daily functions of the shelter
What you need to succeed
• Training or experience in institutional cleaning/janitorial duties
• Must be organized and detail-oriented
• Able to perform physical work up to 8 hours a day
• Able to lift to 50lbs (23kg)
• Ability to communicate in a second language would be considered an asset
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team and individually and take direction
• A commitment to inclusion, diversity, equity, and access
• Access to reliable means of transportation. This position requires travel to second-stage units for cleaning and minor repairs
• A high degree of honesty, integrity, discretion, and confidentiality is required
• Have or be willing to obtain First Aid/CPR Certification
• Have or be willing to obtain Vulnerable Sector Police Check
