Summary of Duties
The Program Associate - Climate Change and Community Engagement will assist with several climate change and community engagement activities including community tree planting events, assisting with pollinator garden planting and maintenance, promoting NPCA programs and services at local events, collecting data (e.g., tree species, size, condition) toward creating a natural asset inventory, and supporting other administrative tasks such as scanning documents, data entry, and recordkeeping.
This position is funded through the Canada Summer Jobs program and candidates must be between the ages of 15-30 and eligible under this program: have Canadian Citizenship, Permanent Residency or Refugee Protection under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; have a valid social insurance number; and be legally entitled to work in Canada.
Key Responsibilities
•Assist with stewardship/community engagement activities including native tree and wildflower planting events, invasive species removals, pollinator garden maintenance, and guided walks/hikes within the watershed jurisdiction;
•Conduct field surveys to collect data about NPCA’s green infrastructure assets (e.g., individual trees, trails, etc.);
•Conduct site visits of pollinator gardens across the watershed to gather information about condition and maintenance needs;
•Attend community outreach events to promote NPCA programs and services;
•Support day-to-day administrative tasks such as document scanning and recordkeeping
•Other duties, as assigned.
Qualifications
•Knowledge and interest in environmental science, biology, geography or a related discipline
•Ability to identify native trees and plants in the NPCA watershed
•Experience with environmental education, outreach, and/or other engagement activities
•Experience with scientific data collection and field work
•Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and computer use
•Willing to work outdoors in various weather conditions for extended periods
•Ability to work independently and as part of a team
•Ability to work some irregular hours and weekends
•Valid G driver’s licence & criminal check
Location: NPCA Main Office - 3350 Merrittville Hwy, Thorold, ON; with travel within the watershed
