A waste transfer station in Port Robinson is seeking a Full Time Labourer/Attendant to join their busy team. With this role there is constant exposure to fumes and airborne particles in the work environment. Working with or near moving mechanical parts from one-third to two-thirds of the time. Exposure to outdoor weather conditions of all extremes is a constant. Within the work environment there is moderate to very loud noise, depending upon the proximity of running trucks and landfill equipment.

Future Waste Recycling Facilities Inc. is dirty and filled with unpleasant odors. There are numerous potential hazards concealed in the dropped garbage and trash, including but not limited to nails and broken glass. The Labourers are subject to change at the discretion of the Site Supervisor and/or the General Manager of Operations.

The position requires attendance Monday through Sunday for eight to ten hours a day. Longer hours may be necessary. Saturday and Sunday work is required at times to meet the needs of customers. The hours worked by the Labourer are subject to change at the discretion of the Site Supervisor.

Duties:
  • Greet customers bringing in loads and direct them accordingly where to dump
  • Check loads as they come in to be sure the material is what is being reported at scale upon entry.  Report any discrepancies in the loads (Ex. Hazardous waste material, mixed loads, etc.)
  • Sort through loads coming in for proper recycling and disposal of various materials
  • Sort and bale cardboard material to be shipped out
  • Follow all instructions and direction set out by site supervisor at the beginning of every working shift
  • Report all performance matters to site supervisor
  • Perform traffic control and ensure that vehicles enter and leave the site in a safe manner
  • Maintain good working relationships with customers and truck drivers frequenting landfill sites
  • Report any problems, incidents or complaints to the Site Supervisor as soon as possible
  • Arrive for work as scheduled each day
  • Work safely at all times
  • Complete work assignments to specifications
Requirements:
  • The ability to follow work instructions is required
  • Must be in sound physical condition and capable of performing a physically demanding job
  • Must be an alert and safety conscious individual
  • Must work well with others
  • The position of Labourer is extremely demanding physically. Two-thirds of the time or more is spent standing or walking. There is minimal time spent sitting. Besides walking and standing the Labourer is constantly turning head and torso, reaching, grasping, bending and flexing the arms, legs, wrists and fingers. The Labourer spends from one-third to two-thirds of the day or more stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling. The ability to lift weights up to one hundred pounds may be required.
  • The senses of hearing and speech are required to receive and confirm work instructions. The senses of hearing, speech and sight are also important for safety reasons. Good eyesight with the ability to adjust focus is required. Good depth perception is required.
